The following classes of road vehicles and combinations of road vehicles are determined in accordance with the number, type and configuration of their axles.

A.1 Any single unit road vehicle with a front axle of class B.1 and a rear axle of class B.10 or 2 axles of class B.26, as shown below, belongs to this class:

A.2 Any single unit road vehicle with a front axle of class B.1 and, at the rear, a tandem axle or 2 axles of class B.25, as shown below, belongs to this class:

A.3 Any single unit road vehicle with a combination of 2 axles of class B.2 or B.3 and of a rear tandem axle where the distance between the centre of the rear axle of the front tandem axle or the front multiple axle and the centre of the front axle of the rear tandem axle is 3 m or more, as shown below, belongs to this class:

A.4 Any single unit road vehicle with a combination of 2 axles of class B.2 or B.3 and of a rear tandem axle where the distance between the centre of the rear axle of the front tandem axle or the front multiple axle and the centre of the front axle of the rear tandem axle is less than 3 m, as shown below, belongs to this class:

A.9 Any single unit road vehicle not belonging to a class already established belongs to this class:

A.10 Any tractor coupled to a semi-trailer or towing vehicle coupled to a trailer forming a combination of road vehicles with a front axle and 2 single axles, as shown below, belongs to this class:

A.11 Any towing vehicle coupled to a trailer forming a combination of road vehicles with a front axle and 3 single axles or a tractor coupled to a semi-trailer forming a combination of road vehicles with a front axle, single axle and tandem axle, as shown below, belongs to this class:

A.12 Any tractor coupled to a semi-trailer or any towing vehicle coupled to a trailer forming a combination of road vehicles with 5 axles, 4 of which form 2 tandem axles, where the distance between the centre of the rear axle of the first tandem axle and the centre of the front axle of the second tandem axle is 4 m or more, as shown below, belongs to this class:

d is 4 metres or more

A.13 Any tractor coupled to a semi-trailer or any towing vehicle coupled to a trailer forming a combination of road vehicles with 5 axles, 4 of which form 2 tandem axles, where the distance between the centre of the rear axle of the first tandem axle and the centre of the front axle of the second tandem axle is less than 4 m, as shown below, belongs to this class:

d is less than 4 metres

A.19 Any combination of road vehicles not belonging to a class already established or any combination of road vehicles with a self-steering axle located elsewhere than at the front of a combination of 3 or 4 axles under a semi-trailer or located elsewhere than at the front of a combination of 3 axles under a belongs to this class.

A.20 Any towing vehicle coupled to a trailer forming a combination of road vehicles with 5 axles, 2 of which form tandem axles placed under the rear of the towing vehicle or under the rear of the trailer, where the distance between the centre of the front axle of the tandem axle and the centre of the rear axle of the trailer or that between the centre of the rear axle of the towing vehicle and the centre of the rear axle of the tandem axle is 8 m or more, as shown below, belongs to this class:

d is 8 metres or more

A.21 Any towing vehicle coupled to a trailer forming a combination of road vehicles with 5 axles, 2 of which form a tandem axle placed under the rear of the towing vehicle or under the rear of the trailer, where the distance between the centre of the front axle of the tandem axle and the centre of the rear axle of the trailer or that between the centre of the rear axle of the towing vehicle and the centre of the rear axle of the tandem axle is less than 8 m, as shown below, belongs to this class:

d is less than 8 metres

A.22 Any towing vehicle coupled to a trailer forming a combination of road vehicles with 6 axles, 2 of which form the tandem axle under the rear of the towing vehicle, 3 of which are located under a trailer with a dolly, where the distance between the centre of the front axle of the tandem axle and the towing vehicle and the centre of the last axle of the trailer is 12 m or more, as shown below, belongs to this class:

  d is 12 metres or more

A.23 Any towing vehicle coupled to a trailer forming a combination of road vehicles with 6 axles, 2 of which form the tandem axle under the rear of the towing vehicle, 3 of which are located under a trailer with a dolly, where the distance between the centre of the front axle of the tandem axle of the towing vehicle and the centre of the last axle of the trailer is less than 12 m, as shown below, belongs to this class:

   d is less than 12 metres

A.24 Any towing vehicle coupled to a trailer forming a combination of road vehicles with 6 axles, 2 of which form the tandem axle under the rear of the towing vehicle, 3 of which are located under a trailer without a dolly, where the distance between the centre of the front axle of the tandem axle of the towing vehicle and the centre of the last axle of the trailer is 9.5 m or more, as shown below, belongs to this class:

d is 9.5 metres or more

A.25 Any towing vehicle coupled to a trailer forming a combination of road vehicles with 6 axles, 2 of which form the tandem axle under the rear of the towing vehicle, 3 of which are located under a trailer without a dolly, where the distance between the centre of the front axle of the tandem axle of the towing vehicle and the centre of the last axle of the trailer is less than 9.5 m, as shown below, belongs to this class:

d is less than 9.5 metres

A.26 Any towing vehicle coupled to a trailer forming a combination of road vehicles with 7 axles, 6 of which form 3 tandem axles, where the distance between the centre of the front axle of the tandem axle of the towing vehicle and the centre of the last axle of the rear tandem axle of the trailer is 14 m or more, as shown below, belongs to this class:

d is 14 metres or more

A.27 Any tractor vehicle coupled to a trailer forming a combination of road vehicles with 7 axles, 6 of which form 3 tandem axles, where the distance between the centre of the front axle of the tandem axle to the towing vehicle and the centre of the last axle of the rear tandem axle of the trailer is less than 14 m, as shown below, belongs to this class:

d is less than 14 metres

A.30 Any towing vehicle coupled to a trailer forming a combination of road vehicles with 6 axles, 2 of which form the tandem axle under the rear of the towing vehicle, 2 of which are located under the trailer, where the distance between the leading and rear axles of the combination of road vehicles is 15 m or more, as shown below, belongs to this class:

A.31 Any towing vehicle coupled to a trailer forming a combination of road vehicles with 6 axles, 2 of which form the tandem axle under the rear of the towing vehicle, 2 of which are located under the trailer, where the distance between the leading and rear axles of the combination of road vehicles is less than 15 m, as shown below, belongs to this class:

A.73 Any tractor coupled to a semi-trailer and a trailer with a dolly forming a combination of road vehicles with 6 axles, 2 of which form a tandem axle at the rear of the combination, where the distance between the centre of the rear axle of the tractor and the centre of the rear axle of the combination of road vehicles is less than 13.5 m, as shown below, belongs to this class:

A.74 Any tractor coupled to a semi-trailer and a trailer with a dolly forming a combination of road vehicles with 6 axles, 2 of which form the tandem axle of the tractor, where the distance between the centre of the front axle of the tractor tandem and the centre of the rear axle of the combination of road vehicles is 14 m, as shown below, belongs to this class:

A.75 Any tractor coupled to a semi-trailer and a trailer with a dolly forming a combination of road vehicles with 6 axles, 2 of which form the tandem axle of the tractor, where the distance between the centre of the front axle of the tandem of the tractor and the centre of the rear axle of the combination of road vehicles is less than 14 m, as shown below, belongs to this class:

A.76.1 Any tractor coupled to a semi-trailer and to a trailer with a dolly forming a combination of road vehicles with 6, 7, 8 or 9 axles that does not belong to any of classes A.72 to A.75, A.86 and A.87, where the distance between the centre of the rear axle of the tractor or the front axle of the tractor tandem and the centre of the rear axle of the combination of vehicles is 15.5 m or more, as shown below, belongs to this class:

A.76.2 Any tractor coupled to a semi-trailer and to a trailer with a dolly forming a combination of road vehicles with at least 6, 7, 8 or 9 axles that does not belong to any of classes A.72 to A.75, A.86 and A.87, where the distance between the centre of the rear axle of the tractor or the front axle of the tractor and the centre of the rear axle of the combination of road vehicles is less than 15.5 m, as shown below, belongs to this class:

A.86 Any combination of road vehicles forming a Type C double train with 7 axles, 4 of which form 2 tandem axles, composed of a tractor, a semi-trailer and a trailer with a double drawbar dolly and meeting the following specifications, belongs to this class:

(1) the tractor has 2 axles or, as the case may be, 3 axles, 2 of which form a tandem axle;

(2) the distance between the axes of the axles of the tandems, including that included in class B.57, is not more than 1.85 m;

(3) the distances between the centre of interaxle spacings belonging to various groups of axles on the combination of road vehicles shall be at least:

(a) 5 m between the tandem of the tractor and that under the first semi-trailer;

(b) 3 m in other cases;

(4) the distance between the centre of the single axle or the tandem axle of the semi-trailer and the centre of the pintle hooks is not more than 1.8 m;

(5) the distance between the centre of the king pin and the centre of their single axle or the centre of their tandem axle is not less than 6.25 m;

(6) the dolly is equipped with a single axle and meets the requirements of section 903 of the Motor Vehicle Safety Regulations (C.R.C., c. 1038);

(7) attachment to the semi-trailer with the lowest loaded mass, determined by the sum of axle loads measured under the wheels of the combination of vehicles which distribute their respective mass of semi-trailers, form a trailer with the dolly, as shown below:

A.87 Any combination of road vehicles forming a Type C double train with 8 axles, 6 of which form 3 tandem axles, composed of a tractor, a semi-trailer and a trailer with a double drawbar dolly and meeting the specifications of class A.86, as shown below, belongs to this class:

A.90 Any combination of road vehicles forming a Type B double train with 8 or 9 axles, composed of a tractor and a semi-trailer on which the front of a second semi-trailer rests and meeting the following specifications, belong to this class:

(1) the tractor has 3 axles, 2 of which form a tandem axle, and where the distance between the axes of the axles of the tandem is not more than 1.85 m;

(2) each semi-trailer has either one tandem axle, where the distance between the axes of the axles is not more than 1.85 m, or has a triple axle, where the distance between the axes of the leading and rear axles is not more than 3.1 m;

(3) the distance between the centre of the front axle of the tandem of the tractor and the centre of the rear axle of the combination of road vehicles is 16.5 m or more;

(4) the distances between the centre of adjoining axles belonging to various groups of axles on the combination of road vehicles shall be at least:

(a) 5 m between 2 tandem axles;

(b) 5.5 m between a tandem axle and a triple axle;

(c) 6 m between 2 triple axles.

A.91 A combination of road vehicles meeting the specifications of class A.90, except for specification concerning the distance between the centre of the front axle of the tandem of the tractor and the centre of the rear axle of the combination of road vehicles, which specification is less than 16.5 m, as shown below, belongs to this class:

F is less than 16.5 metres

A.92 Any combination of road vehicles forming a Type B double train with 7, 8 or 9 axles, composed of a tractor and a semi-trailer on which the front of a second semi-trailer rests and meeting the following specifications without meeting all the specifications of class A.90, belong to that class:

(1) the tractor has 3 axles, 2 of which form a tandem axle, and where the distance between the axes of the axles of the tandem is not more than 1.85 m;

(2) each semi-trailer has either one tandem axle, one triple axle, or, for one only, a group of axles equivalent to a triple axle;

(3) the distance between the axes of the leading and rear axles of each group of axles is not more than 3.1 m;

(4) the distance between the centre of the front axle of the tandem of the tractor and the centre of the rear axle of the combination of road vehicles is 16.5 m or more;

(5) the distance between the centre of adjoining axles belonging to different groups of axles on the combination of road vehicles shall be at least:

(a) 4 between the last axles of the first semi-trailer and the first axle of the tandem of the second semi-trailer;

(b) 5 m between the last axle of the tractor and the first axle of the first semi-trailer and between the last axle of the first semi-trailer and the first axle of the first semi-trailer and the first axle of the triple axle of the second semi-trailer or of the group of axles are equivalent to the triple axle, as shown below:

F is 16.5 metres or more

A.93 The combination of road vehicles meeting the specifications of class A.92 except for the specification concerning the distance between the centre of the front axle of the tandem of the tractor and the centre of the rear axle of the combination of road vehicles, which specification is less than 16.5 m, as shown below, belongs to this class:

F is less than 16.5 metres

A.94 The combination of road vehicles meeting the specifications of class A.92 except that it has under one or both semi-trailers a combination of axles formed of a single axle and a tandem axle, as shown below, belongs to this class:

F is 16.5 metres or more

A.95 The combination of road vehicles meeting the specifications of class A.94, except the specification concerning the distance between the centre of the front axle of the tandem of the tractor and the centre of the rear axle of the combination of road vehicles, which specification is less than 16.5 m, as shown below, belongs to this class:

F is less than 16.5 metres

A.96 Any combination of road vehicles forming a Type B double train, with 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9 axles, composed of a tractor and a semi-trailer on which the front of a second semi-trailer rests, that does not belong to any of classes A.90 to A.95, and where the distance between the centre of the second axle of the tractor and the centre of the rear axle of the combination of road vehicles is 16 m or more, as shown below, belongs to this class:

F is 16 metres or more

A.97 Any combination of road vehicles forming a Type B double train, with 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9 axles, composed of a tractor and a semi-trailer on which the front of a second semi-trailer rests, that does not belong to any of classes A.90 to A.95, where the distance between the centre of the second axle of the tractor and the centre of the rear axle of the combination of road vehicles is less than 16 m, as shown below, belongs to this class:

F is less than 16 metres

For the purposes of classes A.92 and A.93, a group of axles is the equivalent of a triple axle where it is formed of 3 equally spaced axles, comprising at the front a lowered lift axle, attached to the vehicle by suspensions designed to distribution equally, without possible adjustment, to about 1,000 kg where the lift axle is lowered, the mass that can be measured under the wheels of each axle.

For the purposes of classes A.11 to A.13, A.20 to A.35 and A.70 to A.87, all axles under a trailer, except where the trailer is equipped with a dolly, belong to the same class.

For all road vehicles formed of a tractor and a single semi-trailer, it is possible to couple to the semi-trailer a single dolly in order to move it. The addition of the dolly does not operate to change the class of the combination or to increase its maximum limit of total loaded mass.

A.87 Any combination of road vehicles forming a Type C double train with 8 axles, 6 of which form 3 tandem axles, composed of a tractor, a semi-trailer and a trailer with a double drawbar dolly and meeting the specifications of class A.86, as shown below, belongs to this class:

A.90 Any combination of road vehicles forming a Type B double train with 8 or 9 axles, composed of a tractor and a semi-trailer on which the front of a second semi-trailer rests and meeting the following specifications, belong to this class:

(1) the tractor has 3 axles, 2 of which form a tandem axle, and where the distance between the axes of the axles of the tandem is not more than 1.85 m;

A.92 Any combination of road vehicles forming a Type B double train with 7, 8 or 9 axles, composed of a tractor and a semi-trailer on which the front of a second semi-trailer rests and meeting the following specifications without meeting all the specifications of class A.90, belong to that class:

(1) the tractor has 3 axles, 2 of which form a tandem axle, and where the distance between the axes of the axles of the tandem is not more than 1.85 m;

(2) each semi-trailer has either one tandem axle, one triple axle, or, for one only, a group of axles equivalent to a triple axle;

For the purposes of classes A.92 and A.93, a group of axles is the equivalent of a triple axle where it is formed of 3 equally spaced axles, comprising at the front a lowered lift axle, attached to the vehicle by suspensions designed to distribution equally, without possible adjustment, to about 1,000 kg where the lift axle is lowered, the mass that can be measured under the wheels of each axle.

For the purposes of classes A.11 to A.13, A.20 to A.35 and A.70 to A.87, all axles under a trailer, except where the trailer is equipped with a dolly, belong to the same class.
